The Giant Aluminum Foil Ball // 2024

61lbs of aluminum foil rolled into a solid metal ball. I’ve always wanted to make one of these.

When I was very little, a lot of the kids at school, including me, used to collect sheets of foil from our meals in the school cafeteria to roll up and turn into a perfect ball. Kids would get competitive about who could roll the biggest, heaviest, densest, shiniest one. I remember one kid in our class had a ball that took up half of his entire backpack, rolled so smoothly you could almost see your reflection in it. Somehow, the dream to roll the largest foil ball never really left me, and 16 years later, I rolled my own from foil used in my oven, air fryer, and the kitchens of a few friends. An exercise in wish fulfillment.
