Men In Order is my attempt to find the true übermensch of our time. Men are complicated. Being a man is complicated. In my 25-year attempt at being a man, I had been dragged in every direction, given contradicting advice, and lectured to on the subject by just about everyone I know. So in 2023, I gave up. YOU people, you are the ones who make this so hard. I assembled a variety of men from my life, put their headshots in a bag, shook it up, and asked people to dump them out and arrange the photos in order of most to least “man”. I have passed this “book” through colleagues and friends, and presented it as an installation at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023. I have now seen for myself dozens of unique combinations of the men in the series, yet I am nowhere closer to figuring out which of my friends is the übermensch. For this reason, Men In Order is still classified as an ongoing project with further research needed.
